What every electrician's quote must contain
Miss any of these and you leave yourself open to an argument about price when the job is done.
- Which certificate the customer receives — EIC, minor works or EICR
- Whether Part P notification to building control is included
- Your scheme registration, such as NICEIC or NAPIT, and your number
- Accessory spec and who is choosing it — white plastic or brushed steel changes the price
- Whether making good means plaster only, or plaster and decoration
- Power-off periods and how long the property will be without supply
- What happens if existing cabling or bonding is found to be unsafe
Notes for this trade
Making good is the argument you will have if you do not price it. Say exactly what you mean: "Making good includes plaster patching to chases and holes. Decoration, skimming of full walls and floor coverings are excluded."
Quote certification as a visible line item rather than absorbing it. It reminds the customer they are buying compliance, not just cable, and it makes you look different from the man in the van who will not certify anything.
For older properties add: "Price assumes existing earthing and main bonding are adequate. If upgrades are required to comply with BS 7671, these will be priced and agreed before proceeding."
On EICRs, separate the inspection from the remedial work. Quote the inspection as a fixed price and remedials only after you have the results — never bundle unseen remedial work into an inspection price.
Quoting questions
Should an electrician's quote include the certificate?
Yes, and show it as its own line. The customer needs to know whether they are getting an Electrical Installation Certificate, a minor works certificate or an EICR, and whether Part P notification to building control is included.
How do I quote an EICR?
Fixed price for the inspection based on the number of circuits and the property size. Quote remedial work separately once you have the coded results — pricing unseen remedials up front is guesswork that will cost you.
Does a rewire quote need to cover decoration?
It needs to say clearly whether it does. Most electricians make good to plaster and exclude decoration. Whichever you do, put it in writing, because the customer's assumption will be the more generous one.
How long should an electrical quote be valid?
Fourteen to thirty days. Cable and accessory prices move, and a quote accepted months later on old material costs comes straight out of your margin.
