Guide
What missed calls really cost you
A five-minute exercise to turn a vague worry into a number you can act on.
Start with your own call log
Before any estimate, get a real number. Open the call log on your work phone and scroll back four weeks. Count every inbound call you did not answer from a number that is not already a saved contact. That is your missed enquiry count, and for most solo trades it lands somewhere between three and ten a week.
Do not filter it by whether they left a message. The whole point is that most of them did not.
The maths
Missed calls per week x average job value x your usual win rate x 4 weeks = revenue at risk each month.
Worked example: a plumber missing 5 calls a week, average job £2,000, winning 40% of the enquiries he does speak to. 5 x £2,000 x 0.40 = £4,000 a week. Over four weeks that is £16,000 of work he never had the chance to quote.
Even if you think your win rate on cold enquiries is lower, halve the number. £8,000 a month is still more than most trades earn from a full week on site.
Why the true cost is higher than the headline
- Emergency jobs, which convert fastest, are the ones you are most likely to miss while working
- A lost customer is also the repeat work, the extensions and the referrals you never hear about
- The busiest weeks — when you miss the most calls — are when the biggest jobs come in
- Callers who reach a person on the first try rarely bother getting a second quote
What actually moves the number
Three things reduce lost work, in order of effort. First, divert on no-answer so calls never hit voicemail. Second, set a rule for yourself: every enquiry gets a callback the same day, before you leave site. Third, put something in place that answers when you genuinely cannot — a family member, an answering service, or an AI receptionist.
The reason speed matters so much is simple: the trade who replies first is usually the trade who gets the job. Everything after that is about not letting the enquiry go cold.
TradeRing answers the calls you miss, asks what the job is, where it is and how urgent, and sends you a lead card you can act on in one tap. It costs £399 a month — roughly one rescued job for most trades.
Questions
How do I work out what missed calls cost me?
Multiply your missed calls per week by your average job value, then by the share of enquiries you normally win, then by four weeks. Five missed calls a week on £2,000 jobs at a 40% win rate is £16,000 a month of work you never got to quote.
Don't most callers leave a voicemail?
Most do not. A customer with a leaking pipe or a broken boiler wants a human now, so the usual behaviour is to hang up and ring the next name in the search results.
How do I find out how many calls I actually miss?
Check your phone's call log for the last four weeks and count the inbound calls with no answer that were not saved contacts. That is your baseline, and it is usually higher than people guess.
